Need a Little Inspiration? ARISE Introduces New “Combination Pack.”

March 24, 2009

tikpak1The world needs affirming thoughts now more than ever. It’s easy to dwell on the negative and be swept into the flood of turmoil and tragedy. It’s more challenging to stay positive and look for the good in others. ARISE has three products that provide a daily nudge toward positivity. Until now, those three products were only available separately.  You can now purchase all three in a handy “combination pack.” Here is what you will receive, for the astounding price of $15.00:

  • Stop!  The average person spends an hour in a car during each weekday commute. When you find yourself with an idle moment, choose to use your time wisely and build a more positive outlook for yourself. The ARISE Red Light Affirmation cards can be placed on the dashboard and read at every red light. Instead of staring into space or fiddling with the radio, use every red light as an opportunity to fill your mind with positive thoughts, such as “I look at what is right in people, not what is wrong.” Look at red lights not as roadblocks that keep you from moving forward, but as blessings for yourself and others.
  • Look! Positive Cards are thoughtful ways to salute someone else’s selflessness. When you notice a random act of kindness, give ’em a Postive Card. They make excellent morale-lifters in the workplace. Use them at home if you catch your children doing something right.  Give them away to total strangers you catch in the act of doing something good. It’s amazing how your entire world view shifts when you purposely look for the good around you. Everyone involved will be happier, and we can’t get enough of that, can we?
  • Pray! Give a little bit of yourself by offering a prayer for a youth who is struggling. This card can help you with the words. It will only take a moment, and you could bring some peace to a troubled heart.

Each package of 30 cards, 10 of each, comes with directions on how to use them effectively. Each set of cards is bound with a special wrapper containing an inspirational message. If you need more cards, they are for sale individually on the ARISE Website, 50 for $9.95.  The website is also a great place to find new ideas, sale items and free downloads.

Keeping Kids Off The Streets: How ARISE Helps Prevent Homelessness

March 11, 2009

teensAs of 2005, there were 744,000 homeless people in the United States, according to a study by the National Alliance to End Homelessness (msnbc.com).  What causes people to become homeless? Dr. Carl Cohen, a professor of psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, suggests that a number of risk factors accumulate over time to create homelessness. Some of those risk factors include:

  • age, race, ethnicity
  • low income
  • disruptive events in youth, such as the death of a parent
  • prior imprisonment
  • chemical abuse
  • psychiatric disorders
  • victimization
  • poor social support

Many of these risk factors occur during youth. ARISE life skills lessons are a valuable tool for any homelessness prevention program because they attack the problem on multiple fronts. ARISE believes that it’s never too early or too late to help keep these kids off the streets, which is why the ARISE curricula offers life skills material for children from pre-k through the teen years. The ARISE life skills library teaches young people how to manage their anger, build their self esteem, communicate effectively, understand the importance of getting an education, avoid abusing drugs and alcohol, stay out of a gang, get and keep a job and reach their highest potential.

But it’s not just the material itself that does the trick. ARISE programs provide structure to any homeless prevention program. They get youth to open up and express themselves through group discussions and activities. Most of the time, young people just want to be heard. A lack of self-worth, a sense of belonging and the feeling that someone cares about them often drive youth to look for that attention and validation in dangerous ways. ARISE also trains people to use its curricula, turning instructors into mentors, always ready to listen, understand and value the opinions of the youth they interact with.

If you arm kids and teens with these basic life skills, you give them the foundation they need to stay off the streets. A person with an education, high self esteem, great communication skills, strong social connections and a body free of drug and alcohol addiction is unlikely to end up as a statistic.

Court-ordered community service can be pleasant with the ARISE Good Graces program.

The evening news is filled with stories of celebrities, athletes and businesspeople getting into trouble with the law. With them in mind, ARISE designed a fantastic new program which would allow those well-known members of the community to help troubled, at-risk and incarcerated youth while fulfilling their court-ordered community service obligations.

For over 20 years, ARISE has delivered crucial life skills straight into the hands of those who need them most: troubled young people perched on the edge of falling into the adult prison system. From anger management and self-esteem to job search skills, ARISE gives members of this vulnerable population the tools they need to become productive, law-abiding, successful citizens.

Individuals in need of community service hours who wish to work with ARISE have many options open to them. A celebrity does not have to end up like Naomi Campbell, cleaning toilets at the New York Port Authority Restrooms. How much better off society would have been if the Judge had directed Campbell to sponsor an ARISE Group for troubled youth. She could have been trained as an ARISE Group Facilitator, where she could have mentored youth on how to handle problems and resolve violent situations. Perhaps Campbell would have learned a few things about anger management that she could have applied to her own life. Instead, her time was spent doing menial tasks that contributed nothing to the greater good. For a $25,000 tax deductible donation, Campbell could have funded one large or two small facilities with up to 75 students enrolled in the program. One can also choose to become an ARISE Certified Life Skills Instructor and work directly with the kids. ARISE will provide everything needed to get the program off the ground, from the initial instructor training to the materials and facility. This choice gives an individual the exceptional opportunity to interact with the youth they are helping and use their own brush with the law as a cautionary tale.

Another option is a more hands-off approach. The individual chooses any city in the United States and decides on the size of the program, and ARISE sets up the entire turn-key operation from the ground up.

Another benefit of the ARISE Good Graces program is the positive exposure it can provide. After negative publicity, teaching ARISE life skills lessons or launching an ARISE program helps restore a tarnished reputation. In addition to cleaning up their public image, prominent members of the community just might find that they walk away from their ARISE Good Graces experience forever changed. Few programs offer such a far-reaching and meaningful way to reach underprivileged youth.
