The last election and the situation in Iran have proven that human beings yearn to be led by someone fair, decisive and ethical. Leadership ability is something you are born with, but it can also be taught. ARISE offers those that work with at-risk and incarcerated youth several opportunities to become leaders at their facilities, as well as role models and mentors for the youth in their care. By taking a Life Skills Facilitator course or becoming an ARISE Certified Master Trainer, you can transform yourself from someone who simply goes to work each day to someone who is passionate about helping people. To inspire you on your path to leadership, here are five quotes about what it takes to pave a path for others.
- “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.” -Dwight D. Eisenhower
- “The history of the world is but the biography of great men.” -Thomas Carlyle
- “The real leader has no need to lead–he is content to point the way.” -Henry Miller
- “A leader is a dealer in hope.” -Napoleon Bonaparte
- “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” -John Quincy Adams

Bailouts, foreclosures and job losses, oh my! Each day seems to bring more bad news about the economy. Reading the newspaper or watching the news is enough to make anyone anxious about the future and the state of their finances. As we go through this trying time, remember that the country has been through this before and emerged stronger. Here are some quotes about money and the economy from some of history’s greatest minds. Read them over, think about them and try to breath. Everything will work itself out. It always does.
- You have not lived a perfect day, even though you have earned your money, unless you have done something for someone who will never be able to repay you. – Ruth Smeltzer
- Money never made a man happy yet, nor will it. The more a man has, the more he wants. Instead of filling a vacuum, it makes one. – Benjamin Franklin
- So often we rob tomorrow’s memories by today’s economies. – John Mason Brown
- Should you find yourself in a chronically leaking boat, energy devoted to changing vessels is likely to be more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks. – Warren Buffett
- Anyone who thinks there is safety in numbers hasn’t looked at the stock market pages. – Irene Peter
- Men make counterfeit money. In many cases, money makes counterfeit men. – Sydney J. Harris
- It’s a recession when your neighbor loses his job; it’s a depression when you lose yours. – Harry Truman
- We must beware of trying to build a society in which nobody counts for anything except a politician or an official; a society where enterprise gains no reward and thrift no privileges. – Winston Churchill
- Be fearful when others are greedy and be greedy only when others are fearful. – Warren Buffett
- I never attempt to make money on the stock market. I buy on the assumption that they could close the market the next day and not reopen it for five years. – Warren Buffett

No man is an island—we are influenced heavily by the people in our lives. True friends, those that lift us up when life knocks us down, are rare and valuable things. Especially during the turmoil and confusion of adolescence, friends can mean the difference between failure and success. Succumbing to peer pressure and picking the wrong friends can destroy your future. How is someone a friend when they seek to see you fail? Real friends share in your triumphs as if they are their own.
- ”The only pressure I’m under is the pressure I’ve put on myself.” —Mark Messier
- “True friends are like diamonds, precious and rare. False friends are like leaves, found everywhere.” —proverb
- “A true friend advises justly, assists readily, adventures boldly, takes all patiently, defends courageously and continues to be a friend unchangeably.” —William Penn
- “Anybody can sympathize with the sufferings of a friend but it requires a very fine nature; it requires, in fact, that nature of a true individualist with a friend’s success.” —Oscar Wilde
- “I can trust my friends. These people force me to examine, encourage me to grow.” —Cher
Peer pressure and harmful friendships are often big factors in someone’s decision to stay in school or drop out. For more information on resisting peer pressure and choosing the right friends, check out So You’re Thinking of Dropping Out of School, which will soon have a companion volume entitled “So You’re Thinking of Staying in School,” a valuable handbook for how to communicate effectively, build healthier, closer relationships, become a better listener and manage negative emotions. Dropping Out book one gives you the reasons why you should stay in school; book two gives you all the tools you need to follow through and get your diploma.

Choice. It defines what it means to be human. Having an unpleasant thought? You can choose to make that thought disappear. In a bad mood? Choose to be happy. Yes, it’s THAT simple. Our choices tip the scales toward misery or bliss. The decisions we make each day either propel us forward or hold us back. Choosing to constantly harbor negativity, cling to a grudge and react with anger prevents you from living a peaceful life and poisons the people around you. If you knew you had a choice, would you chose to live that way? Probably not. The good news is, you DO have a choice.
To inspire you on your path to making healthier choices, here are 10 quotes about that spectacular human ability:
- Choices are the hinges of destiny. -Edwin Markham
- You’ve got a lot of choices. If getting out of bed in the morning is a chore and you’re not smiling on a regular basis, try another choice. -Steven D. Woodhull
- The hardest thing to learn in life is which bridge to cross and which to burn. -David Russell
- Using the power of decision gives you the capacity to get past any excuse to change and and every part of your life in an instant. -Anthony Robbins
- Your life is the sum result of all the choices you make, both consciously and unconsciously. If you can control the process of choosing, you can take control of all aspects of you life. You can find the freedom that comes from being in charge of yourself. – Robert F. Bennett
- Good decisions come from experience, and experience comes from bad decisions -Author Unknown
- It’s our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities. – J.K. Rowling
- When you have to make a choice and don’t make it, that is in itself a choice. -William James
- It’s not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are. -Roy Disney
- There are two primary choices in life: to accept as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them.” -Denis Waitley
Still can’t seem to make the right choices? Our Drop It At The Door Workshop might be just what you need. Originally designed for people who work in the high-stress juvenile justice field, Drop It At The Door can teach anyone how to change their life by changing their choices and abandoning stress, negative emotions and harbored anger. Sign up for a training using the link above or by calling (888)680-6100.

The world we live in is never black and white. The universe is colored by the way you look at it—attitude determines whether you see just the black cloud, or its silver lining. Attitude isn’t determined by how much money you make, how you were raised, where you live or the people around you. What makes a positive attitude so powerful is its ability to exist independently, and sometimes in spite of, the world around you.
Here are 10 quotes about attitude.
- “The trick is in what one emphasizes. We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves happy. The amount of work is the same.” —Carlos Castaneda
- “The thing always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in a thing makes it happen.” —Frank Lloyd Wright
- “Thought is the sculptor who can create the person you want to be.” —Henry David Thoreau
- “If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” —Marcus Aurelius
- “The greatest part of our happiness depends on our dispositions, not our circumstances.” —Martha Washington
- “Everything can be taken from man but the last of human freedoms—the ability to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” —Victor Frankl
- “The greatest discovery of any generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitude.” —William James
- “An optimist is the human personification of Spring.” —Susan J. Bissonette
- “Sooner or later, those who win are those who think they can.” —Richard Bach
- “To different minds, the same world is a hell, and a heaven.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson
Changing your attitude can be difficult. If you need a little help, try taking an ARISE CHOICES: Drop it at the Door workshop. The CHOICES training teaches you how to let go of anger, resentment and stress, especially in the workplace. The goal of the CHOICES training is to stop the “boomerang” effect of taking work-related stress home, and carrying worry about home issues to work. CHOICES participants learn how to drop stress, anger and negativity “at the door,” improving both their work and home lives.
To sign up for the DIATD training or find out more information about ARISE Foundation’s other programs, visit the ARISE website or call TOLL FREE: 1 (888) 680-6100 .

A man is about as big as the things that make him angry -Winston Churchill
- Not the fastest horse can catch a word spoken in anger -Chinese proverb
- Do not teach your children never to be angry; teach them how to be angry. -Lyman Abbott
- Resentment is an extremely bitter diet, and eventually poisonous. I have no desire to make my own toxins. -Neil Kinnock
- Consider how much more you often suffer from your anger and grief, than from those very things for which you are angry and grieved. -Marcus Antonius
Anger is a poisonous emotion. Each moment you are angry, your heart races, your body tenses up, your mind shuts down and your immune system weakens. A life spent in anger and resentment is a life wasted.
It’s not always easy to let go of anger. People often need guidance on how to consciously choose peace over conflict. If you or someone you know needs help controlling your emotions, ARISE can help. The CHOICES: Drop It At The Door program teaches participants how to shed negative emotions and stop the boomerang effect of stress and anxiety ricocheting between home and work. Stop bringing your troubles at home into the workplace and vice versa. Relax and choose your own thoughts. It is possible.
For more information on the Drop It at The Door workshop or the ARISE Anger Management books, visit the ARISE Website.
